How to do it
- Confirm the exact tank model, manual edition, treatment conditions, and previous anode inspection date.
- Follow the accepted manual interval. Softened or phosphate-treated water can require a shorter inspection interval; ask a qualified water-heater technician to set the appropriate date.
- Arrange qualified inspection. Do not remove an anode, open covers, drain the tank, or disconnect plumbing using this guide.
- Record the inspection and any replacement recommended from actual anode condition. An inspection interval does not imply automatic replacement.
Stop and get help when
- Gas or exhaust odor
- Active leak
- Scorching, soot, or a damaged vent
- Water near electrical parts
Leave the area and seek emergency help for gas, exhaust, or carbon-monoxide concerns. Have a qualified water-heater professional evaluate leakage, venting, anode, relief-valve, and flushing needs.
